Dry skin may feel tight, rough, itchy or flaky. The aim of care is comfort, not a promised glow. Dryness can relate to weather, washing, products or a skin condition, so a routine cannot fix every cause. This guide separates useful basics from optional additions.

Start by reducing irritation

Avoid hot water, abrasive scrubs and repeated washing. Use a gentle cleanser that you tolerate, and follow its directions. “Hydrating” on a bottle is a claim to evaluate, not proof that it will suit you. Fragrance-free products can be a sensible starting point if fragrance irritates your skin.

Make moisturizer the main step

Apply a suitable moisturizer after washing while skin is still slightly damp. Creams or ointments may suit dry areas better than a light lotion, but texture preference and tolerance vary. Choose a finished product rather than making a recipe from individual ingredients. A product does not need to be expensive or contain every fashionable ingredient.

A simple morning example

Cleanse gently as needed, apply moisturizer and plan sun protection for exposed skin. Use broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher outdoors, with shade and suitable clothing. A toner, vitamin C serum and facial oil are not compulsory steps. If a product stings, do not add another serum to counteract it.

A simple evening example

Remove makeup with a suitable method, cleanse gently and moisturize. A separate “night cream” is optional if your usual moisturizer is comfortable. There is no need to layer vitamin E, vitamin C, peptides and hyaluronic acid together. Follow prescribed treatment instructions rather than rearranging them using this example.

Is slugging necessary?

No. Covering the face with petroleum jelly is a trend, not a requirement. Petroleum jelly can help some dry areas, but the AAD advises avoiding facial use if you are acne-prone because some people may develop breakouts. Do not layer an occlusive over irritating actives or prescription treatment without advice. Stop if it causes problems.

Adjust to symptoms, not just the calendar

Cold or dry conditions may call for a richer texture; warm weather does not guarantee that dryness disappears. A clean, properly maintained humidifier may help a dry indoor environment. Keep products you tolerate and change only what is needed rather than replacing everything each season.

Do dry flakes need exfoliating?

Not necessarily. A fixed weekly acid or scrub routine can worsen dryness and irritation. Prioritize gentle washing and moisturizer. Dryness can make fine lines more noticeable, but that does not mean it is the sole cause of wrinkles or that hydration reverses ageing.

When to get help

Seek advice for persistent dryness, pain, cracks, bleeding, a rash, sleep-disrupting itch or signs of infection. Dryness can accompany eczema and other conditions that need specific care. Do not take high-dose supplements or diagnose a deficiency from skin appearance.
